It is simple, elegant, and classic all rolled into one. It is a perfect estate piece to gift or wonderful to start or add to your collection. Beautiful quarter sawn oak (1/4 or tiger oak) store cabinet. This is a particularly unusual item. The number of stores in the country was much fewer in comparison to the number of homes or even churches.
It has display area with bowed glass and adjustable shelves, a slide out flat surface, and drawers for storage. The sides are serpentine sides which was rare and expensive. The quality of the workmanship as well as the unique design indicates that it was probably for a higher end shop. Perhaps it was less of a country item but more of a specialized city clothing store. The joinery of the drawers are a series of dowels. Our experience over decades has shown that this is more durable than even the more common dovetails. However, doing this type of joinery during production was very labor intensive. So, you only tend to find it done this way for a short time during the 1880's. Therefore, it is relatively easy to date this item. It is an extremely versatile piece of furniture which is extremely beautiful and very well made.
This is an original piece not a later reproduction. It has been previously restored including regluing and refinishing. It was refinished inside and out. If there was any other damage, it was professionally repaired. The wear is normal and appropriate to an item of this age.
